World Autism Month
Date: 04/24/23
Every April is World Autism Month. Superior HealthPlan wants to make sure you have information to help you or your family. We have gathered resources to help you learn more about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including the symptoms and treatments.
ASD covers a range of conditions that affect speech, social skills and repetitive behaviors. Usually, a person will start showing signs in early childhood. Some symptoms include:
- Difficulty keeping a conversation going.
- Delayed speech.
- Repeating words or phrases.
- Being sensitive to light or touch.
- Repetitive body movement.
- Developing specific routines and having a tough time with change.
Diagnosing ASD can be difficult. There is not a specific test that can show that someone is autistic. Symptoms and seriousness differ from person-to-person. A few ways to treat autism include:
- Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA): It encourages positive behaviors and discourages negative ones. This is used commonly among doctors.
- Occupational Therapy: It teaches how to do daily activities like getting dressed and having a conversation.
- Speech Therapy: This includes talking as well as communicating through pictures and gestures.
