Tips for Managing and Talking About Your Mental Health

Date: 02/25/25

Caring for your mental health is just as important as caring for your physical health. Small changes to your everyday life can have a big impact on your mental health and overall well-being. However, it’s important to know when and how to ask for help.

A few ways you can take care of yourself, and your mental health are:

  1. Getting 30 minutes of exercise per day. Even just walking for 30 minutes is beneficial.
  2. Eating right and drinking plenty of water. Removing caffeine and alcohol from your diet can help your mood and well-being.
  3. Making a sleep schedule and sticking to it. Limiting screen time before bed can also help you get more quality sleep.

Sometimes it’s hard to know when you need extra help caring for yourself. If you are experiencing lack of sleep, difficulty concentrating or a loss of interest in things you normally like you may need to talk to your doctor. Here are a few tips on how to ask for help with your mental health:

  1. Start by talking with your primary care provider. They can help you find a mental health professional.
  2. Prepare ahead of time. Bring a list of any concerns and questions to your doctor’s appointment.
  3. Bring a friend or relative to appointments. It can be hard talking about your struggles with a doctor or someone you don’t know well. Bringing someone you trust with you can be more comfortable talking about what you are going through.
