Now Available: COVID-19 Vaccines for Children 6 Months - 5 Years of Age

Date: 06/22/22

On June 18, 2022, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, endorsed utilizing the COVID-19 vaccine for children 6 months through 5 years of age. This follows recent activity by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to expand the emergency use authorizations for both Pfizer and Moderna for this age group.

Distribution of pediatric vaccinations for these younger children have started across the country, and will be available at thousands of pediatric practices, pharmacies, Federally Qualified Health Centers, local health departments, clinics, and other locations. Children in this younger age group can be vaccinated with whichever vaccine is available (either Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech). See formulation options below:

  • The Pfizer formulation appears in a marron cap vial and consists of a 3-dose series.
  • Moderna formulation appears in a blue cap vial and consists of a 2-dose series.

The CDC recommends that all children, including children who have already had COVID-19, should get vaccinated. Superior HealthPlan members and/or their families may reach out to get more information or ask where vaccines for children are available.
