How Staying Hydrated Can Boost Your Health

Date: 06/12/25

Staying hydrated is an important part of being healthy. Although it sounds simple to drink plenty of water, according to the National Council on Aging, 75% of Americans don’t get the fluids they need every day.

Here are a few ways that staying hydrated can benefit you:

  1. It is important for heart health. Your blood is primarily made of water. Drinking plenty of water helps the heart pump blood more easily through the body.
  2. It can help with weight management. Drinking water can help you feel fuller between meals, meaning less snacking.
  3. It helps you regulate your temperature. If you’re dehydrated, your body has less ability to tolerate hot temperatures. Drinking water helps produce sweat when you’re overheated to help cool your body down.
  4. It can give you more energy. Dehydration can cause your heart to work harder, using more energy and making you feel tired. Staying hydrated keeps your energy up.

It is important to know the signs of dehydration too. A few symptoms of dehydration are thirst, dizziness and headache. Some people are at risk of developing dehydration more than others. A few risk factors that can cause dehydration are:

  • Vomiting or having diarrhea.
  • Being outside in hot weather.
  • Sweating a lot from exercise.
  • Being 60 years old or older.
  • Certain health conditions, such as diabetes.
