Effective 1/17: COVID-19 At-home Test Kits Available

Date: 01/14/22

Effective January 17, 2022, Superior HealthPlan Medicaid (STAR, STAR Health, STAR Kids, STAR+PLUS) and CHIP members will be able to receive a COVID-19 at-home test kit from a network retail pharmacy, in accordance with recent Texas Health and Human Services (HHS) guidance.

The list of covered kits will be available as part of the Vendor Drug Program Formulary Drug Search webpage. HHS selected these products based on their status under the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

Members may obtain a maximum quantity of 4 kits per calendar month. Prescriptions can be processed using single kits (1 test) or multi-pack kits (2 tests), equaling a total of 4 COVID-19 at-home test kits per month. As an example:

  • 1 single pack kit (1 test) – Benefit allows 4 kits per calendar month
  • 1 multi pack kit (2 tests) – Benefit allows 2 kits per calendar month

Quantities dispensed can be up to the maximum allowed of 4 kits per calendar month with or without a prescription. Pharmacies must submit a separate claim for each transaction of a COVID-19 test kit.

Please note: In the event of supply shortages at local pharmacies, members may still obtain a COVID-19 test at participating medical offices or testing centers.
