Be in the Know for Autism Awareness Month

Date: 04/22/24

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological disorder that can affect how people communicate and learn. There are a variety of types and symptoms of ASD, which is why it is called a “spectrum”.

ASD can be diagnosed in children as early as two years old. It can be difficult to diagnose since there is not a medical test to diagnose the disorder. Doctors look at how the child has developed and at their behavior. ASD symptoms can include:

Difficulty with social interaction

  • Making little or no eye contact
  • Being slow to respond in conversation
  • Difficulty with facial expressions

Repetitive and restrictive behaviors

  • Repeating words and phrases
  • Having intense long-term interest in numbers, details or facts
  • Difficulty changing from a regular routine
  • Sensitivity to light or sound

According the National Institute of Health website, treatment can include taking medication or occupational and speech therapy to help with daily tasks and social skills. Visit Superior HealthPlan’s Autism Help webpage to learn about resources and treatment options available to members who have ASD.
